FAQ

What is the purpose of a comprehensive exam for a new patient?
A comprehensive or complete exam allows us the time to not only get to know you, but allows us to do a thorough evaluation of your mouth and teeth, including check for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, smile evaluation, TMJ and bite check.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
The average patient with no history of gum disease should have a dental exam and cleaning every 6 months to help ensure a healthy mouth.

My gums bleed when I brush. Do I have gum disease?
Bleeding gums are often a sign of gingivitis (the first stage of gum disease), or it could be a sign of more advanced disease. The only way to tell is to have an exam that includes a thorough evaluation of your gums including gum measurements.

What can I do about the color of my teeth? They seem to be getting darker.
Tooth color can be naturally yellow, brown or gray, but it can also get darker with age, or from coffee, tea or wine drinking. We have had excellent success with custom-fitted whitening trays or mouthguards. These are small thin covers that fit closely over the teeth and can be worn during the day or while sleeping. A peroxide based gel is placed in the trays and safely and gently bleaches out the discolorations and helps reverse the signs of aging.

My husband snores loudly. Not only does it keep me awake, but he is often very tired during the day. What can be done?
First, I would recommend your husband see a physician trained in sleep disorders. He may need to have an overnight sleep study to determine if it is just simple snoring, or a more serious condition called sleep apnea where breathing actually stops. Depending on his condition, we can make special dental devices that hold the lower jaw forward during sleep, help increase the airway size and thus decrease snoring and control apnea.
